On March 8, 2016, the First Lady of The United States Michelle Obama delivered an influential speech to celebrate International Women’s Day and one year of government initiative Let Girls Learn. Michelle Obama shows her concern over education among women. Women all over the world have trouble getting the education they deserve due to physical, cultural and even financial problems. This fight will become even more difficult as girls grow up unless she is so lucky that her family is willing to pay for her school fees. Unfortunately, there are numerous challenges preventing teenaged girls from gaining access to a quality education that empowers them to achieve their full potential. However, it is important for women to gain equal access to education so that they are able to make choices over the kinds of life they wish to live and also prevent themselves from sexual exploration, trafficking, and HIV etc. Using powerful literally devices such as pathos, ethos and logos as well as other rhetorical devices, Michelle Obama effectively delivered her speech by portraying her purpose for women to achieve global equality in education and persuading people to take action into their everyday’s life as a result to end all forms of discriminations. 
Pathos is very important in Michelle Obama’s speech when a speaker is trying to raise awareness of global inequality issue toward women and makes people feel in deep with her point. Gender inequality happens around us in our daily lives, however, it is always overlooked and people may feel the negative effects of this issue. Michelle uses emotional appeals when she tries to explain the reality of how females are suffering from gender discriminations back in time and even now this is still a major problem. Michelle makes her audiences feel extremely shocked and angry when she tells people the fact that there are now “sixty-two million intelligent girls treated unfairly” all over the world and they are not able to gain equal “opportunities that we sometimes take for granted”.  Michelle gives some unfortunate examples that states when women are trying to get education, they will be “shot”, “kidnapped”, “brutally assaulted”, “facing danger”  and this makes the audiences realise adolescent girls are facing threats from external forces and they will probably have to face terrible consequences even when they try to gain access of knowledge. This appeals people’s sense of anger as we now feel angry due to the unfair treatments towards women when listener imagines if their loving people are in the same situation. 
As an influential activist for women rights, Michelle successfully shows her credibility by giving a clear statement that she is the right person to deliver this speech regarding women’s education issue. Michelle presents ethos when she said she has “traveled and met with women and heard about the problem from experts”  and this issue is “brought out on a law and policy level”. By doing so, Michelle effectively broadens and changes people’s perspective on this issue. Later, Michelle also said she sees girls from the different country -“Senegal and Cambodia etc.” who is eager to learn because they know studying is the only way to change the reality so they will never stop fighting for their life, their freedom until women and men have the same opportunity in everything including education. Based on previous statements, Michelle fully expressed her competence by referring to her personal experience and knowledge to project a positive impression to the people, which strongly emphasises her credibility. 
The logo appeal comes into play in Michelle’s speech when she gives us specific statistics – “1600 people in approximately 50 states support Let Girls Learn” and “about 200 countries agreed teenaged girls’ education a top priority as a new Global Goal, a funding and education programs for girls”. By focusing on things that had been done in the past, Michelle wants to prove that people from different areas and countries start coming together to contribute to women’s right progress and she also encourages more and more people to take a step into future events.  
Attempting to persuade the people to participate in Let Girls Learn and take a step to do something about it, Michelle uses several rhetorical devices in her speech. She uses repetition in her speech to show her approval for people’s participation of Let Girls Learn. Confidently, she lists several accomplishments made by people by repeating “They’re” in the beginning of each sentence. For example, she states “They’re providing the scholarship for girls in Liberia…, they’re doing leadership training for girls…”. She hopes people can continue working together and “make a real difference on girl’s education”.  At the end of the speech, she also uses rhetorical question by asking the audience whether if “they are ready to work?” and if the audiences think “they can get this done?” According to Michelle, she is confident that more and more people are willing to take part in this situation and help solve the problem and she also wants to emphasize that her ultimate goal – gathering world’s attention to help adolescents, girls to complete their education and make the society a better place to live. 
Michelle’s speech primarily serves to call forth action to make an actual change in girl’s education. Throughout Michelle Obama’s speech, all of the audiences are impressed by her candid, forceful and enthusiastic tone and her passion towards this issue. In addition, the speech is so personalized with stories that she successfully makes an emotional connection with one another. Therefore, she receives the loudest applause at the end of the speech. She has influentially established pathos, ethos and logos appeals from the beginning till the end by introducing and addressing the reality that the girls are treated unfairly in every corner of the world, emhasizing the changes that had been made and illustrating what could be done in the future. Literary devices of repetition and rhetorical question also bring a deep meaning and have clear purpose on their own to accomplish her goals.
